Where Gredice is

Gredice belongs to the city district of Trešnjevka – jug and to the Horvati – Srednjaci local committee (mjesni odbor), one of the district's six; there is no committee called Gredice.23,25,26 As a neighbourhood (kvart), Gredice has no official boundary. The local-history project Mapiranje Trešnjevke draws Gredice's limits at the Črnomerec stream to the west, Horvaćanska cesta to the north, Ulica Marijana Haberlea to the east and the Vrapčak stream to the south.1

Ulica Gredice runs north to south, from Ulica Šime Devčića and Ulica Bernarda Bernardija to Jarunska ulica, and carries on across it towards Jarunska obala. North of Jarunska it is lined with blocks of flats, south of it with family houses.33,1 Across the Črnomerec to the west lies Jarun.5

  • A park surrounded by greenery sits between Romić's blocks, and the 2025 General Urban Plan requires Gredice's valuable parks to be kept.14,27

What to expect

  • According to Mapiranje Trešnjevke, the estate has no school, library or church of its own and relies on Jarun and Knežija. The Knežija library is at Albaharijeva ulica 7.1,39
  • The blocks between Horvaćanska and Jarunska were first occupied between 1987 and 1989.5
  • Gredice Gardens has been under construction at Gredice 112 since September 2025; the developer plans to finish in January 2027.32
  • The part of Gredice along Jarunska was never laid out as a planned estate, and in 2023 Jutarnji list reported rapid new building there.31

What life is like in Gredice

Gredice is mostly a 1980s housing estate. Before that it was a thinly settled stretch of fields and meadows between Jarun and Horvati, and in the 1960s and 1970s it had a single main street, Gredice I.1 Nepoznati Zagreb records the estate as finished at the end of the 1980s.8 According to Mapiranje Trešnjevke, the blocks were completed only after the 1987 Universiade and occupied by 1989, the last housing built in this area.5

Block K by the architect Đorđe Romić was designed in 1985 and completed in 1987.12,13 A 2026 interview in Express describes the complex as very large buildings with triangular roofs set around a park.14 In the same interview Romić says he always aimed for a Two-room flat (dvosoban stan)A flat with two rooms, usually a living room and one bedroom. In Croatian listings the room count isn't the number of bedrooms.Source: Pravilnik minimalnih tehničkih uvjeta za projektiranje i gradnju stanova iz POS-a (NN 106/04, 25/06, 121/11), čl. 2., checked 19 Oct 2026More in the glossary that four people could live in, and for residents to be able to identify with their building. The garden between the blocks, he says, belongs to everyone, and he meant the café by the entrance as a café for all residents.14

Besides Ulica Gredice, the estate's streets are named after the architects Marijan Haberle, Božidar Rašica, Juraj Neidhardt and Bernardo Bernardi.23,19,20,21,22

South of Jarunska, Ulica Gredice is lined with family houses.33 Mapiranje Trešnjevke once counted only about ten old houses left there, and in 2023 Jutarnji list reported new villas going up fast on that stretch, as far as the Vrapčak and around Jarunska obala.1,31 Gredice 100, a block of 26 flats of 57 to 132 m² by the architect Zoran Zidarić, was completed in 2024 and appeared in the HOUSING 2025 exhibition catalogue.29,28,30

The 2025 General Urban Plan requires Gredice, like Voltino, Srednjaci and Jarun, to keep its original building types and design and its valuable parks.27 Population figures exist only for the whole Horvati – Srednjaci committee area, which includes Gredice: it had 11,829 residents and 5,882 dwellings at the 2011 census, and 10,735 residents on 112.28 ha at the 2021 census.26,24

Where the name Gredice comes from

According to the history published by OŠ Josipa Račića, the name comes from the village word for neatly kept beds where village women grew vegetables for the people of Zagreb.2 The Croatian language portal defines a gredica as a cultivated patch for growing vegetables or flowers, a lijeha (bed).3 The same school history says the name Gredice appears in the late 19th century.2

The name is plural, so in Croatian you live "na Gredicama", the locative plural.3 It is a different place from Gredice near Zabok in Hrvatsko zagorje, where the writer Ksaver Šandor Gjalski was born.40

A short history of Gredice

According to Mapiranje Trešnjevke, Gredice lies in the far south-west of Zagreb's old city territory, whose western border followed the Črnomerec stream; Jarun, across the stream, belonged to other municipalities, for a long time to Vrabče Gornje.5 Neighbouring Horvati was joined to Zagreb on 7 September 1850 as one of four municipalities.2 The old main street of Gredice, Mapiranje says, branched off Vurovčica, once the main road into town, and followed roughly the line of today's Ulica braće Domany.5

NK Sava was founded in 1947.4 On the night of 25 to 26 October 1964 the Sava burst its banks and flooded Zagreb.10 According to the OŠ Josipa Račića history, the flood did heavy damage in Horvati, Vurovčica, Gredice and the neighbouring settlements, and many houses had to be pulled down.2

The estate was built under the "Gredice" detailed urban plan, in force from 16 May 1985 and amended in 1987.16 In 1986 the City abolished the names of two streets in the Horvati – Srednjaci local community because they had been demolished for new building: Novaljska ulica and an old Gredice side street.17 The tram reached Jarun along Horvaćanska cesta in 1987.9,7,11

In 1993 Ulica Pere Cara was renamed Ulica Marijana Haberlea, and a street in the same local community was named after Božidar Rašica, who had died the year before.18,20 On 20 November 2000 the tram was extended from Jarun to Prečko.11
