Siget is an estate in Novi Zagreb, in the city district of Novi Zagreb – zapad (New Zagreb – West). "Kvart" (neighbourhood) is an everyday name with no official boundary, so this guide describes Siget through the district's 14th local committee (mjesni odbor), Siget, based at Radmanovačka ulica 39.9,10 On 28 October 2020 the City Assembly moved the whole of Radmanovačka ulica and the new Podbrežje estate into it from the Sveta Klara committee, after a five-year campaign by residents.11,12

Since 2020 the committee area has been bounded to the north by the south side of Avenija Dubrovnik and to the east by Avenija Većeslava Holjevca, as far as its junction with Horvatova and Nežićeva. From there the boundary runs west to the railway by Utinjska and Radmanovačka, then north to Avenija Dubrovnik, leaving the Trnsko buildings outside.11 Trnsko lies to the west, Sveta Klara to the south, Novi Zagreb – istok across Avenija Većeslava Holjevca, and the Zagreb Fair (Zagrebački velesajam) across Avenija Dubrovnik.10,11,3

There are two Podbrežjes. The old streets of family houses, Podbrežje III to XIV, belong to the Kajzerica committee, while the Podbrežje housing estate the City has been building since 2016 belongs to Siget.11,25 With an address in Podbrežje, it's worth checking which one is meant.

For and against: life in Siget

What's going for it

  • Trams 7 and 14 run along Avenija Dubrovnik, on the committee area's northern boundary, stopping at Velesajam, and since 2018 bus 242 has run from the main railway station (Glavni kolodvor) to Podbrežje.11,47,48,24,49
  • A primary school at Siget 23, the Siget nursery in two buildings, and a private Waldorf primary and secondary school at Siget 18c.2,41,42
  • Avenue Mall at Avenija Dubrovnik 16, with more than 100 shops and a CineStar cinema, and a Dom zdravlja Zagreb – Centar health centre at Avenija Većeslava Holjevca 22.37,39
  • The 2025 General Urban Plan protects Siget from new housing, and Park mladenaca has been under renovation since October 2025, with 88 new trees.35,31,29

What to expect

  • Trams run only along Avenija Dubrovnik, on the committee area's northern boundary, and no stop is called Siget.11,47,48
  • There's no Zagreb City Libraries branch in Siget; the mobile library stops every other Thursday.43
  • OŠ Većeslava Holjevca needs ten more classrooms and a bigger hall to move to a single shift, and so far the extension exists only in the General Urban Plan.36
  • The City plans to extend Ulica Radoslava Cimermana. In September 2026 residents of Trnsko and Siget started a petition against the route along Park mladenaca to Avenija Dubrovnik; the City says only the southern 500 metres, near Podbrežje, are being contracted.32

Super Andrija, a block of 488 flats.

Siget is a modernist estate of residential towers and large blocks, with a small group of single-storey atrium houses, built over several decades to the first urban plans for Novi Zagreb.4,1 Best known are the six towers along Avenija Dubrovnik, facing the Fair.3,4 According to the Zagreb City Museum, each has a basement, a ground floor, 16 floors and a roof Balcony and terrace (balkon, terasa)A balcony projects from the building's façade; a terrace is a level surface on or next to the building, covered or open. Both count only in part in floor-area figures.Source: Pravilnik o načinu obračuna površine i obujma u projektima zgrada (NN 90/10), čl. 4.–5., checked 19 Oct 2026More in the glossary, with four flats on each floor, and they were built from Jugomont panels and reinforced concrete to withstand a magnitude 6.1 earthquake.3

In the second half of the 1960s, single-storey houses with their own atriums went up between the first northern blocks and the Brodarski institut. Kristian Strukić of the Zagreb City Museum writes that they were the first larger attempt at family-house building in southern Zagreb.4 The school chronicle records 25 family houses, built from May 1968 to the end of 1969.1

Super Andrija, at Siget 18A–C, is a 16-storey block with 488 flats. Miroslav Catinelli designed it, Industrogradnja built it, and it was finished in 1973.14,15,16,4 Strukić wrote in 2013 that the estate's business centre lies around Trg senjskih uskoka.4

Radmanovačka ulica is in the south of the committee area. In 2020 Večernji list counted about 25 buildings there with about 1,000 residents, and the railway between Radmanovačka and Utinjska had been the informal border with Sveta Klara.12 The City is building the Podbrežje estate: work began in September 2016 on 19.4 hectares, and the first phase, four buildings with 608 flats, was being finished in July 2018. The flats can be rented, bought or allocated from the City's priority list.25 In March 2026 block A11 was under construction, with about 300 flats for affordable and social rent, due in the first half of 2027.26

The new General Urban Plan, reported by Zagreb.info in October 2025, protects Siget and Trnsko as modernist estates from new housing. Only public and communal buildings are allowed, and unbuilt land in finished estates such as Siget has been rezoned as park.35 At the 2021 census the committee area, including Podbrežje and Radmanovačka, had 8,714 residents on 155 hectares.9

Where the name Siget comes from

The name comes from the Hungarian sziget, "island". According to Branimir Brgles, Siget and Sigečica share the same origin: both recall the larger river islands of the once-braided Sava, and local people called fields on river islands sigeti.13

A short history of Siget

The first thing built in this part of Novi Zagreb was the Brodarski institut (the shipbuilding research institute), between 1949 and 1959.19,20,8 All its buildings and plant were finished in 1968.18 The Fair moved to its present site across Avenija Dubrovnik in 1956, and Most slobode (Freedom Bridge), built in 1959, made building south of the Sava possible.8

In 1963 Zdenko Kolacio co-authored the conceptual design for Siget, a year after co-authoring the plan for southern Zagreb.17 Building began the same year, from the northern part with the six towers facing the Fair; the Zagreb City Museum dates the towers 1962 to 1967.1,4,3 The first residents moved in between 15 and 30 January 1965, into the building at Siget 14.1,3

Work on a first school began in April 1965 but stopped at the foundations, which can still be seen on the green north of today's school.1 A new school with 16 classrooms, a Jugomont design with Vinko Uhlik as chief architect, was handed over on 26 December 1967, and lessons began on 3 January 1968 with 708 pupils. It was named after Većeslav Holjevac on 22 December 1970.1 According to the Zagreb City Museum, Holjevac, the mayor who took Zagreb across the Sava, lived in the tower at Siget 9.3

The parish of the Holy Cross (Sveti Križ) was founded on 3 August 1967, split off from the Sveta Klara parish, and has been run by Franciscans from the start.5 From 1971 to 1982 parish life went on in a wooden hut at the edge of the site of the future church.5,4 The church and friary were built from 1971 to 1977. Archbishop Franjo Kuharić blessed the church on 22 August 1982, and it was consecrated on 15 May 1983.5,6

The tram line over Jadranski most and along Avenija Dubrovnik towards the Fair opened on 29 November 1985.50 Avenue Mall opened on 30 August 2007.38,37

In summer 2023 a storm badly damaged Park mladenaca. A renovation costing about €1.1 million began in mid-October 2025, with 88 new trees and 47 shrubs, new paths, lighting, benches and a drinking fountain; HRT reported that the work would take seven months.31,29,32 From February to March 2026 the City surveyed residents about Park Novi Zagreb, a planned park of about 70 hectares between Super Andrija in Siget and Mamutica in Travno. In all, 7,936 people took part; the park is still only a plan.34,33

In November 2025 HRT reported that the institute had been liquidated, under a government decision taken four years earlier.22

What to see in Siget

  • Brodarski institut

At Avenija Većeslava Holjevca 20. Marijan Haberle's complex, with innovative structures by Krunoslav Tonković and 1960s landscaping by Mira Halambek-Wenzler, was entered in the register of cultural heritage on 18 July 2005.19,20 Together with Pionirski grad, it was one of the first two post-war ensembles in Croatia protected as cultural-historical ensembles.20,19 Radio Sljeme called its grounds "the botanical garden of Novi Zagreb".21

  • Church of the Holy Cross

At Trg Svetog Križa 1. Emil Seršić designed it with Matija Salaj, and the Croatian Technical Encyclopedia calls it the first large sacred building put up in Zagreb after 1945.7,5 Its roof of 142 pyramid-shaped Corten-steel pieces rests on 74 vertical prisms. The bell tower is 33 metres tall, and 50 granite steps lead up to the entrance. Josip Botteri Dini's stained glass went into its 49 windows in 1988, and the parish gives 800 seats and 1,200 standing places.6

  • Park mladenaca

The "Newlyweds' Park" between Siget and Trnsko. Newlyweds paid for a sapling, a so-called tree of youth.3,4,30,29 The sources disagree: planting began in 1964 or 1967 and went on until the late 1970s, somewhere between about 8,000 and 18,000 trees were planted, and the park covers 7 to 9 hectares.3,4,29,30,31,32 According to ZGexpress, the landscape architect Smiljan Klaić designed it. It holds Stipe Sikirica's sculpture "Mladenci" (1974), a young man lifting his bride onto a horse.30,31

  • Super Andrija

At Siget 18A–C.14 Nobody knows for sure where the nickname comes from. Mapiranje Trešnjevke lists three candidates: a pop song sung by Radmila Karaklajić, the Yugoslav army general Andrija Aksentijević, who lived there, and the architect Andrija Čavajda, who worked on the project and died during construction.16

  • Park of the 102nd Brigade

A park near the Holy Cross church and the Siget health centre. The brigade's veterans chose it because the church keeps photographs of the brigade's fallen and holds a requiem Mass for them every December.51,11

Did you know?

  • The Brodarski institut has a 276-metre towing tank for ship models and a 32-metre round basin under a wooden dome by Krunoslav Tonković, who also designed Most slobode.21
  • The Holy Cross church was allowed a bell tower but no bells, so it plays recordings of the bells of Varaždin cathedral.6
  • According to Mladen Klemenčić, at the end of 1965 the city transport company ZET introduced bus line 43, which ran in a half-circle over Most slobode and stopped in Siget, Trnsko and Savski gaj; Branimir Štulić immortalised it in his song about "Krvava Meri".23 Štulić's family moved to Siget in 1967.27,3
  • In his memoir Neven Kepeski writes that the early members of Psihomodo Pop were "a crew from Siget", and that Davor Gobac, who came from Zaprešić, joined after an audition in a Siget garage.28
