Questions

Can I ask for a receipt for my rent?
Yes. Whoever pays may ask for a receipt (Obligations Act, Art. 180); after a bank or post-office payment only with a good reason, since the bank's confirmation is the proof. If the recipient refuses, you needn't hand the money over and can deposit it with a court or a notary instead.
Do I need a receipt if I pay by bank transfer?
A transfer leaves a record: the bank's confirmation is the proof, so a separate receipt usually isn't needed. For cash, a receipt is the best proof.
What should a receipt say?
No law prescribes its form. To be good evidence it should say who paid, who received the money, the amount in euros in figures and words, what it was for and for which period, the date and place, and carry the recipient's signature. If only part was paid, note what's still owed.
