Travno at a glance
Where Travno is
Officially Travno belongs to the city district of Novi Zagreb – istok and is covered by a single local committee (mjesni odbor), Travno.2,1 The committee covers part of the settlement of Zagreb, so Travno is not a separate settlement.1 "Kvart" is the everyday word for a neighbourhood and has no official boundary; the committee's boundary runs along Ukrajinska ulica to the north, Sarajevska cesta to the east, Vatikanska ulica to the south and Ulica Savezne Republike Njemačke to the west.1
North of Ukrajinska lies Utrina (officially the Utrine committee), and south of Vatikanska lies Dugave.3,4 The Sopot committee touches Travno only at its north-west corner.5 According to Wikipedia, Travno borders Sloboština to the west and Jakuševec to the east.6

What life is like in Travno
Travno is a planned 1970s estate. Its detailed plan was drawn up in 1972 by the architect and urban planner Miroslav Kollenz.8,7 The estate was built around a large central pedestrian green, Park Travno, lined by a row of public buildings: the school, the nursery, the cultural centre and the church.10,7,9 According to Joža Horvat, Kollenz's plan set aside as much as 60% of the land for parks.9 Bauštela writes that the buildings are tallest at the edges of the estate and step down towards the centre.7
Blocks of flats stand on just two streets, Ulica Božidara Magovca and Kopernikova.9,1 The first to be finished were the four residential towers on Kopernikova ulica, designed by Đuro Mirković and Nevenka Postružnik.7,11
Mamutica (Block 6), designed by the same architects within Kollenz's plan, is really two buildings joined by a pedestrian plateau: Mala Mamutica with three entrances and Velika Mamutica with six.9,12,13 The tallest parts have 19 floors, the building is about 60 metres high and it has 1,169 flats.9,12,11 Mirković told HRT in 2024 that the building's size followed Kollenz's brief to concentrate the required housing density in one block, so that large lawns could stay free.12
Census data from the Croatian Bureau of Statistics, cited by Joža Horvat, counted 2,245 people living in Mamutica in 2021. Horvat counts the often-quoted figure of 5,000 residents, which HRT also gave in 2024, among unverified claims repeated like a legend.9,12
Residents have nicknamed other buildings too. According to Horvat's study, the block at Ulica Božidara Magovca 12–24 is called Slušalica (the receiver) because from above it looks like a telephone handset, and the red-brick blocks at Kopernikova 4–38 are called Crveni mak (red poppy). The four identical towers on Kopernikova are named after the colour of their window frames and entrances, so three of them are the Red, Green and Yellow towers.9
The writer Svjetlana Lugar, who has lived in Travno since 1982, described it to HRT as "a neighbourhood for families with children".12 The Travno committee area had 9,960 residents at the 2011 census and 8,578 in 2021, about 14% fewer.25,2
Where the name Travno comes from
The name Travno means grassy ground or meadow, the same meaning as neighbouring Utrina.14,6 Boris Postnikov writes in Bilten that the estate was named after its grassy terrain.15 Before building began, the land was called Krčevine, meaning cleared ground. The school's chronicle and Wikipedia find the name on maps from 1930, while Josip Forjan, then director of the Međunarodni centar za usluge u kulturi, said in 2012 that cadastral maps recorded it from 1939.16,6,24 Once the area was urbanised, the name Krčevine fell out of use.14,6
The writer Gustav Krklec was given the task of naming the new Novi Zagreb estates.14,6 The architect Mirko Maretić recalled, as quoted in Bilten, that the names came mostly from old maps and plans.15
A short history of Travno
Kollenz drew up Travno's detailed plan in 1972, and building began in 1973. Until the school opened, children from the new estate went to schools in Sopot and Utrina.8,16 According to the parish's history, the first residents moved in in 1974.44 Mamutica was built from 1974 by Industrogradnja.7,9 The Kineski zid, two blocks by Ljubomir Perić, Emil Seršić, Benedetto Tardozzi, Neda Morsan and Ivana Zorić, was built by Industrogradnja in 1978, according to Bauštela.7,9
The parish of St Luke the Evangelist was founded on 1 July 1975 by decree of Archbishop Franjo Kuharić. There was no church, so the parish bought a flat at Ulica Božidara Magovca 167/1, which the archbishop blessed as a church on 18 October 1977.17 The nursery, designed by Radovan Tajder, was built the same year, and lessons began at the new school on 10 September 1977. It was formally opened on 25 November and named after Gustav Krklec, who had recently died.19,16

St Luke's church was built from May 2006 on the large meadow in front of Mamutica and consecrated in 2007.18,17 The first Dani Travnog neighbourhood festival was held in 2012.24 Work on widening Sarajevska cesta with a tram track began in October 2024, and the road opened to traffic on 2 October 2026.43,27

Dječji vrtić Travno
