Where Vrapče is

Vrapče is in the west of Zagreb, along the Vrapčak stream, which comes down from Medvednica.1,49 Ilica ends here: at the old level crossing it carries on as Aleja Bologne.10 Three local committees (mjesni odbori) in two city districts cover the neighbourhood. Gornje Vrapče and Vrapče – centar belong to the Podsused – Vrapče district, and Vrapče – jug, south of the railway, to the Stenjevec district.3,4,5,6

Today Vrapče is not one of the City of Zagreb's 70 settlements (naselja) but part of the settlement of Zagreb.9 Gornje and Donje Vrapče were once counted as separate villages, and the Croatian Bureau of Statistics lists them among former settlements whose data are now part of Zagreb's.9,23 Gornje Vrapče, on the slopes of Medvednica, makes up 27.9% of the Podsused – Vrapče district's area, and Vrapče – centar 6.4%.7

What life is like in Vrapče

Vrapče splits into a hillside part and a town part. Gornje Vrapče on the slopes of Medvednica is less built up and has kept something of a rural character, while Vrapče – centar by Ilica is densely populated.7,10 At the 2011 census Gornje Vrapče had 444 people per square kilometre and Vrapče – centar 3,276.7 Vrapčanska ulica links the two, running from Ilica up to Gornje Vrapče.26 The old village centre with St Barbara's church sits between the two newer centres, Donje and Gornje Vrapče.10

According to a 2023 study by the Institute of Art History (Institut za povijest umjetnosti), the village's historic layout survives only around the parish church. Even so, the study describes the hill with its early Baroque church, churchyard wall, bell tower and the cemetery behind as exceptionally picturesque.10 Donje Vrapče grew as a new urban quarter only after the Second World War, under a 1949 regulation plan amended in 1953.10

In the catchment of OŠ grofa Janka Draškovića, which covers central Vrapče, family houses and a few smaller buildings dominate, while the newer area around the former Ris factory is all blocks of flats.26 Demolition of the Ris rubber-goods factory began in July 2006, and the developer Nivonekretnine put up a new estate on its site, with Nivogradnja as the builder.27 The estate is on Bolnička cesta, about 200 metres from Aleja Bologne, and the 2007 plan gave every building lifts and every flat a parking or garage space.27,28

At the 2021 census the Gornje Vrapče and Vrapče – centar committee areas had 11,829 residents between them.4,5 Vrapče – jug, south of the railway, grew from 6,067 people at the 2011 census to 7,990 in 2021.8,6 St Barbara's parish today counts about 3,400 families and about 10,500 parishioners.20

The part south of the railway, a local committee of the Stenjevec district based at Medarska ulica 80b. It covers 121.24 ha and had 7,990 residents at the 2021 census.6

Where the name Vrapče comes from

Nobody knows for sure where the name comes from, and the sources give several explanations.2,18,19 The City of Zagreb, on its page about the district's history, derives it from the Old Slavic word rab (a slave or serf) and links it to this being the Zagreb Kaptol's largest feudal estate in today's district.2 According to Canon Janko Barle, as retold by OŠ grofa Janka Draškovića, the village appears in 13th- and 14th-century charters as Rabuch, and today's name grew out of the phrase "v Rabče" ("in Rabče").19

The linguist Branimir Brgles offers two hypotheses for the name of the Vrapčak stream. It may come from vrabac or vrapče ("sparrow", "little sparrow") or, given the older form Rabuch, from rappa, "fence", because the Vrapčak was the western boundary of the Kaptol's estates.18 Brgles also notes that the usual word for a sparrow in this area is pikač, not vrabac.18

A folk legend credits St Francis with the name. In the version the school retells, the villagers stole his cloak in 1212 and he called after them, "oj vi vrapci, vrapci" ("oh, you sparrows, sparrows").19

Late Bronze Age urnfield graves have been found by Bolnička cesta, and the Zagreb City Museum lists the excavation of a prehistoric burial ground in Vrapče in 1955.10,1,51 In 1894 a Roman altar to Silvanus, carved from sandstone from a local quarry, was found.1,19 A 1217 royal charter confirming the Kaptol's estates calls the area Rabuch, and the Vrapče parish appears in the oldest surviving list of the Zagreb diocese's parishes, from 1334.10,18,20

In March 1527 about thirty families arrived from Lika after the Ottomans burned their village. They settled by the Sava, but a flood destroyed the settlement that November, and in 1528 the Kaptol gave them land in Vrapče.19,21,10 Today's church of St Barbara was built in 1700–1703 thanks to Canon Ivan Znika, and Bishop Emerik Esterházy consecrated it in 1703.22,21 After the 1880 earthquake, stone for rebuilding Zagreb Cathedral was cut in Vrapče's Pećine quarry.21

From 1862 the railway also ran past Vrapče, alongside the old road from Zagreb to Podsused.10 The Vrapče school began teaching on 11 November 1863.24 In 1865 Gornje Vrapče had 99 houses and 798 people, and Donje Vrapče 51 houses and 489 people.1,23 Between 1877 and 1879 an asylum was built to a design by the architect Kuno Waidmann, on Kaptol land called Jačkovina, then six kilometres west of Zagreb.10,11,12 Patients were moved in on 15 November 1879, and the next day it was ceremonially opened as the Stenjevec asylum (Zavod za umobolne Stenjevec), named after the neighbouring village.10,12 It has been called Klinika za psihijatriju Vrapče since 2011.11

According to Danijel Matijević's 2026 study in the journal Tragovi, on 1 October 1944 the Ustaša authorities raided the hospital and arrested 107 patients: 69 Serbs, 36 Jews and two Croats. One escaped, and none of the 106 taken away ever returned.15 In an Allied air raid on 14 March 1945 the target was the nearby railway, but three of the hospital's pavilions were destroyed.10,16 Nine staff were killed. The hospital museum, as quoted by 24sata, puts the number of patients killed at 33; Index.hr gives 37. The victims lie in two shared graves in the hospital cemetery.16,17

Vrapče became part of Zagreb in stages, around 1949–1950.2,23,19 Aleja Bologne was built around 1970.10 The earthquakes of March and December 2020 damaged St Barbara's church and the hospital's main building.21,10 The Ministry of Culture and Media puts the church's restoration at €1,018,886.25 in all, most of it from the EU Solidarity Fund.22
