What it's like to live in Blato

Blato is a neighbourhood in the south-west of New Zagreb, in the New Zagreb – West district. It borders Remetinec to the east, as well as Botinec, Lučko, Hrvatski Leskovac and Brezovica, and faces Jarun across the Sava. The village already appears on an 1822 map of Zagreb and its surroundings. Two main roads run through it: Jadranska avenija and Karlovačka cesta, which leads towards Jastrebarsko and Karlovac.

Once a village in its own right, Blato is still mostly family houses, though large new blocks of flats are going up along Karlovačka cesta. It is known for the unfinished University Hospital building on Jadranska avenija: work began in the 1980s and stalled in the early 1990s when the money ran out.

Since 2022 a new branch building of OŠ Savski Gaj primary school has stood in Blato, on the site of the old branch school. The neighbourhood also has kindergartens, the football club NK Blato, a few small shops and cafés, and a Kaufland supermarket, while Arena Zagreb and the Arena Centar shopping centre are about 2 km away. Blato has no tram and no railway station; the nearest station is Remetinec, and bus routes from the Savski most terminal run through it towards Lučko.
