What it's like to live in Jarun

Jarun lies in the south-west of Trešnjevka – South, between Horvaćanska cesta and the Sava, with Staglišće to the north and Vrbani and Prečko to the west. A small village once stood here beside a branch of the Sava. After the 1964 flood an embankment cut the channel off from the river, and gravel digging turned it into today's lake. The housing estate went up quickly alongside the sports centre, and the tram line along Horvaćanska cesta reached Jarun in the 1980s.

South of the estate is the Jarun sports and recreation centre, opened for the 1987 Summer Universiade. Beside the Sava lie two lakes, Veliko and Malo jezero, with islands, a regatta course for rowing, kayaking and canoeing, and gravel beaches. Footpaths and a track for cycling and rollerblading run around the water, and rowing and sailing regattas and kayak and canoe races are held there regularly.

Close by are Jarun market, just north of Horvaćanska, Bartol Kašić Primary School and the Church of the Holy Mother of Freedom, a memorial to the Croatian defenders killed in the Homeland War. Trams along Horvaćanska run east towards Savska cesta and the city centre and west to Prečko, and buses run along Hrgovići.
