What it's like to live in Knežija

Knežija lies in the eastern part of Trešnjevka – South, east of Srednjaci. Its northern edge is Zagrebačka avenija, a dual carriageway with three lanes in each direction that separates it from Trešnjevka – North. Along Horvaćanska cesta lies the old village of Horvati, one of the villages named in records from the mid-18th century; today it belongs to the Knežija local committee, and its primary school, opened in 1897, still works in the same building.

The Salesians were given land here in 1928, when Knežija was a suburb on the edge of the city. The parish of Mary Help of Christians was founded in 1937; its church, next to the Salesian monastery, was built from 1942 to a design by Zvonimir Požgaj and blessed in 1948. Today Knežija is a densely built residential neighbourhood with two primary schools, Matija Gubec and Horvati, and the Knežija public library.

Trams run along Horvaćanska cesta, stopping at Knežija and Horvati, and the Savski most terminus lies to the south-east. South of Horvaćanska, towards the river, in the neighbouring Horvati – Srednjaci committee, are the Stjepan Radić student village, known as Sava, the Faculty of Kinesiology and the Mladost sports park, largely built or renovated for the 1987 Universiade, with its swimming pools, athletics stadium and tennis courts.
