What it's like to live in Kajzerica

Kajzerica is a neighbourhood of New Zagreb – West on the south bank of the Sava. Its residential part is bounded by Jadranski most to the west, Avenija Dubrovnik to the south, Ulica Radoslava Cimermana to the east and the river to the north. From 1809 to 1813 the Sava here was the border of Napoleon's Illyrian Provinces. By the south end of the old Savski most, at Remetinečka cesta 1, a border guardhouse survives as a protected cultural monument, with a memorial to that border beside it.

Kajzerica began as a settlement of family houses with large gardens. From the early 1990s private developers have put up blocks of flats on former house plots and green areas, so today it is densely built with less greenery. Osnovna škola Kajzerica, a primary school, and IV. gimnazija, a grammar school, have shared a building on Ulica Žarka Dolinara since September 2014, with a kindergarten branch in a separate building.

Kajzerica is home to the Zagreb Hippodrome, the Zagreb Fair grounds and NK Lokomotiva's ground, which the club uses as its base and for its youth teams. Four bridges cross the Sava here: the road bridge Most slobode, Jadranski most with its tram tracks, the pedestrian and cycle Savski most, and the Hendrix railway bridge. The Sava embankment works as a cycle route away from traffic. Trams run along the edge of the neighbourhood and buses from the main railway station go into it; there is no railway station.
