What it's like to live in Trešnjevka

Trešnjevka is the part of western Zagreb that, in the broad sense, covers everything south of the railway to Ljubljana and west of Savska cesta, down to the Sava; in the narrowest sense, just the area around Ozaljska ulica. The name comes from Črešnjevke, an old name for land here. It is split between two city districts, Trešnjevka – North and Trešnjevka – South.

Until the end of the 19th century this was a thinly settled edge of the city; workers' settlements then grew up south and west of the railway. Building took off after the first land parcelling in 1923: a settlement west of Selska cesta followed in 1928, and in 1930 the Istrana i invalida estate went up on the south side of Ozaljska for refugees from Istria and war invalids. North of Ozaljska, the Prva hrvatska štedionica estate was built from 1935. Interwar single-storey houses, often put up without a plan, long defined the area; many have since made way for larger new buildings.

The heart of the neighbourhood is Trešnjevački trg, with the market known as Trešnjevački plac and Zvonimir Milčec Park. Tratinska ulica runs to the square from Savska cesta, and Ozaljska carries on west to the Ljubljanica tram terminus; the tram line here was built in 1935. West of the market, Stara Trešnjevka Park is home to the Trešnjevka Cultural Centre; the Trešnja City Theatre, a professional children's theatre, is on Mošćenička ulica, and St Joseph's Church stands north of the square on Trakošćanska ulica.
