Where Trnje is

Trnje is the name of both a city district and a neighbourhood inside it. The Trnje district covers 7.36 km², from the railway to the Sava and from Savska cesta to Držićeva and, in part, Heinzelova, and has 13 local committees (mjesni odbori).2,11,6 This guide is about the neighbourhood of Trnje, meaning Staro Trnje and Kruge. Officially that is the Trnje and Staro Trnje committees plus the part of the "Marin Držić" committee south of Vukovarska and east of the street called Kruge.7,10 Neighbourhoods have no official boundaries; the Krista Kralja parish describes its own area as exactly the settlements of Kruge and Staro Trnje.21

The Trnje committee covers the area between Vukovarska and Slavonska avenija, from Ulica Hrvatske bratske zajednice to Kruge. Staro Trnje lies south of Slavonska avenija, from Most slobode and Holjevčeva to Kruge and Ruždjakova, and reaches down to the Sava. The eastern half of Kruge, with the streets Njivice, Pile, Vranovina and Breznička, belongs to the "Marin Držić" committee, which north of Vukovarska also stretches up to the railway.7 The Nove Kruge prefab estate is officially in the Staro Trnje committee area too.7 According to Wikipedia, it is usually counted as part of Savica, the next neighbourhood in the same district.9

The Lisinski concert hall and the National and University Library stand just outside the neighbourhood: Lisinski opposite the Trnje committee, across Vukovarska, and the library on Ulica Hrvatske bratske zajednice, in the neighbouring Miramare committee.38,39,41,7

For and against: life in Trnje

What's going for it

  • Three tram lines, 3, 5 and 13, stop at Lisinski and Kruge on Vukovarska.50,51,52
  • Three primary schools: Trnjanska (Trnjanska cesta 99, one shift), Grigor Vitez (Kruge 46) and Marin Držić (Nalješkovićeva 4).8,25,26
  • A health centre at Kruge 44, a city library at Vukovarska 222 and the Catholic nursery Blažena Hozana; the City's 2019 list also gives the Iskrica nursery.32,31,22,8
  • SRC Trnje and SRC Staro Trnje have tennis, five-a-side and basketball courts, and the Sava embankment runs along the southern edge of Staro Trnje.8,7

What to expect

  • The railway cuts the neighbourhood off from the city centre. According to Wikipedia, only one road underpass, on Miramarska, and two pedestrian tunnels pass through its embankment.9
  • Two big roads run along and through the neighbourhood: Vukovarska to the north, a four-lane avenue with the tram down the middle, and Slavonska avenija, once the Autoput motorway, between Trnje and Staro Trnje.11,28,7
  • The open-air part of Tržnica Trnje, with its stalls and display cases, is closed; only the shops and kiosks are open.30
  • According to the 2022 minutes of the local committee council, the urban plan for Staro Trnje is not being carried out at a proper pace, apart from a small area around Križna ulica, because the land is split into many small privately owned shares.48

What life is like in Trnje

The architects Melita Čavlović and Antun Sevšek see the meeting of "informal" family houses and textbook post-war modernist buildings as Trnje's lasting theme, in an urban plan that is still unfinished.53 The Zagreb City Museum writes that Trnje has gone from a village and a workers' fringe to part of the wider city centre.13

Staro Trnje is the central and oldest part of Trnje.15,9 At its session of 11 July 2022 its local committee council asked the City to review the 2012 urban plan: less density and height, and more low-rise and individual houses that respect the "historic and ambient character" of Staro Trnje. It held up Cvjetno naselje as the model.48

Many streets in Trnje and Staro Trnje are named after rivers, from Bosutska, Krivajska and Orljavička to Ukrinska, Drinska and Usorska.7,28 A city committee chose the names between 1927 and 1929, arguing that famous people's names did not suit streets that were mostly very shabby.15,28 Some never got a name and still carry Roman numerals: Trnjanski nasip I–V, Usorska I–III and II. Pračanska.7,1

Along Vukovarska stand 1950s apartment blocks. The "Kruge" building at Vukovarska 222–224 was designed by Neven Šegvić and Ivo Geršić (1953–60), and the one at no. 238 by Ivo Geršić (1953–56); both are protected cultural heritage.33 East of no. 222 is an estate of five-storey blocks built in 1948–50.34 In the east of Staro Trnje, around 1960, the firm Jugomont used its Ju-59 system to build Nove Kruge, Zagreb's first estate of prefabricated two-storey blocks.35,9

According to the local-history site Mapiranje Trešnjevke, small family houses with yards survive east of the street Kruge, in Njivice, Pile, Vranovina and Breznička. Njivice and Pile grew up in the 1930s, and before the Second World War a survey counted 170 One-room flat (jednosoban stan)A flat with one room besides the kitchen and bathroom, so living and sleeping share it. In 2013 the art historian Davorin Vujčić wrote that Trnje's old native families were the fifth or sixth generation living on the same spot.15 At the 2021 census the Trnje committee area had 2,233 residents (2,129 in 2011) and Staro Trnje 3,546 (3,737 in 2011).3,4,8

Where the name Trnje comes from

The neighbourhood took its name from the old village, later a suburb, called Trnje, and the whole district is named after it.17,9 Trnje means thorns, and the linguist Nives Opačić groups it with Trešnjevka (cherries) and Šalata (lettuce) as Zagreb places named after what grew there.12

Tax lists of 1576 and 1578 spell the village Thernye. Historians also identify it with the medieval village of Nova ves ("new village") by the Sava.16

Kruge is an old name too. An 18th-century map describes one spot as "west of Kruge", and according to Mapiranje Trešnjevke, Kruge existed as a street and a settlement from the early days of settlement in Trnje.16,28 The sources do not explain what the name means.

Right after the Second World War, the name Novi Zagreb (New Zagreb) was used for the newly planned area between the railway and the Sava, today's Trnje, before it moved to the south bank of the river.45

A short history of Trnje

In 1911 an Avar-Slavic cemetery from the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries was dug up on Kruge.1,9 The area of Trnje lay within the boundaries of the Golden Bull of 1242, which gave most of it to Gradec.1,16 In the 17th century Trnje, with 17 families of serfs of Count Oršić and later Count Kulmer, was the largest serf village on the city's land.1,9

In 1764 a ferry was set up across the Sava, and it ran until 1959, when Most slobode was built.15,37 In 1801 the village had 112 people in eight houses.1,9 It became part of Zagreb in 1850, when Gradec, Kaptol and the surrounding villages were joined into one city.13,1,15 The railways, to Sisak in 1862 and to Budapest around 1870, cut the roads linking Trnje to the centre.1,15

Between 1910 and 1913 the population rose from 2,907 to 8,017, with many illegally built houses by the Sava.1,9 In 1930 the City counted 2,017 legally built houses and about 4,000 "wild" ones in the area of today's district, and Trnje had become a markedly working-class area, cut off from the city.1,9 In 1926 Miroslav Krleža wrote scathingly that Trnje had neither cold nor hot water.15,9 The Sava flooded often, and in 1923 the water reached the main station itself.28,9

After the war Vukovarska was widened into an avenue, the backbone of the new socialist city, and in 1949 the tram ran into Trnje along it for the first time.11,27,34 In the 1964 flood the water reached family houses in Trnje, and Novi Retkovec was built mostly for people from Trešnjevka and Trnje who had lost their homes.14,44

According to Vujčić, in the late 1980s the architect Radovan Delalle drew up a plan with residents for the gradual renewal of Staro Trnje, but in 1991–92 all of Zagreb's detailed plans were annulled.15 He also writes that in 2007 residents founded an association, STUP, and with a petition stopped a draft plan that would have replaced family houses with nine-storey blocks.15
