What it's like to live in Trnje

Trnje is the district south of central Zagreb, between the railway and the Sava, from Savska cesta in the west to Heinzelova in the east. The railway embankment, crossed by only a few underpasses, separates it from the Lower Town. It takes in Staro Trnje, Kruge, Martinovka, Vrbik, Cvjetno naselje, Savica, Kanal and Sigečica. The main roads are Ulica grada Vukovara, Slavonska avenija and Avenija Marina Držića; trams run along Vukovarska, Držićeva and Savska, and Zagreb Bus Station is on Držićeva.

In the first half of the 20th century Trnje was a markedly working-class area, built up mainly between the railway and today's Vukovarska; the flood-prone south by the Sava was developed only from the mid-century. Cvjetno naselje, designed between the wars by Vlado Antolić, is a regular grid of family houses and town villas, protected as cultural heritage since 2004. Nove Kruge (1958–61) is an estate of prefabricated two-storey blocks, and Savica a high-rise estate built partly on an old bed of the Sava. By Slavonska avenija, at Zeleni trg, stand the Rakete, three brutalist residential towers by Vjenceslav Richter and colleagues.

The district has the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall, the National and University Library, Croatian Radiotelevision, the city fountains on Ulica Hrvatske bratske zajednice and the faculties of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture, and Humanities and Social Sciences. The Most slobode and Most mladosti bridges cross the Sava, and there are city markets in Trnje and on Savica.
