What it's like to live in the Lower Town

The Lower Town is Zagreb's central district, below the Upper Town. It runs south to the railway line, west to Ulica Republike Austrije and east to Heinzelova. Most of it was built in the 19th century as a regular grid of city blocks, following the regulatory plan of 1865, while the part east of Draškovićeva, towards Kvaternikov trg, went up mainly in the first half of the 20th century. The buildings are arranged in blocks around inner courtyards.

Running through the district is the Lenuci or Green Horseshoe, a chain of squares and parks laid out from the second half of the 19th century: from Zrinjevac via Strossmayerov trg, Trg kralja Tomislava, Starčevićev trg and the Botanical Garden to Marulićev trg, Mažuranićev trg and Trg Republike Hrvatske. The Archaeological Museum is on Zrinjevac, and the Croatian National Theatre building, opened in 1895, stands on Trg Republike Hrvatske. The Clinic for Traumatology is on Draškovićeva.

The pedestrian zone covers Trg bana Jelačića, Ilica as far as Gundulićeva, Bogovićeva and Cvjetni trg, plus parts of Gajeva, Masarykova, Teslina and Preradovićeva. Trams run along Ilica, Frankopanska, Savska, Jurišićeva, Draškovićeva and Vlaška and stop outside the main railway station on Trg kralja Tomislava. On the district's eastern edge is Kvaternikov trg, known as Kvatrić, and just south of it, where Martićeva meets Šubićeva, is the Kvatrić market.
