What it's like to live in Ribnjak

Ribnjak lies directly east of Kaptol and the cathedral. Its spine is Ribnjak street, running south to north, with Ribnjak park along its western side, against the eastern walls of Kaptol. The Ribnjak local committee area also takes in Trg Josipa Langa and parts of Vlaška and Branjugova. Vlaška, once a settlement in its own right, was joined with Gradec, Kaptol and Nova Ves into a single town municipality in 1850. August Šenoa was born on Vlaška in 1838, and his monument stands where Vlaška meets Branjugova.

The park is named after the bishops' fishponds that existed here until the 19th century; the last was filled in in 1870 to make way for Trg Josipa Langa. Around 1830 Bishop Aleksandar Alagović had the grounds laid out as an English-style garden, and until 1946 the park belonged to the Zagreb archdiocese. Antun Augustinčić's sculpture ‘Stid’ (Shame) and a monument to the poet Ivan Goran Kovačić stand in the park.

Trams run along Ribnjak towards Medveščak and Mihaljevac, and the southern part of the neighbourhood is served by the tram interchange on Draškovićeva. Trg bana Jelačića is a few minutes' walk away. The old part of Vlaška, from Bakačeva to Draškovićeva, belongs to the city's pedestrian zone.
