What it's like to live in Podsljeme

Podsljeme is a district in the north of Zagreb, on the southern slopes of Medvednica; its name means 'below Sljeme'. It borders Maksimir and the Upper Town – Medveščak to the south, Črnomerec to the west and Gornja Dubrava to the east, while its northern boundary follows the ridge of Medvednica, facing Krapina-Zagorje County and the municipality of Bistra. Most of the district lies within Medvednica Nature Park, established in 1981.

Many streams cut narrow channels down the wooded southern face of the mountain, and the settlements sit on the lower slopes: Šestine, Mlinovi, Gračani, Markuševec and Vidovec. Family houses make up most of the housing. Markuševec, east of Gračani, has its parish church of Sts Simon and Jude Thaddeus in the village centre, and Vidovec lies further east.

The district is the way into Medvednica Nature Park: Gračani has the valley station of the Sljeme cable car and the link to the city's tram network. Within the district are a ski area, mountain lodges such as Puntijarka, Runolist and Kraljičin zdenac, and the Tomislavov dom hotel. Buses link Šestine and Mlinovi with Britanski trg, Markuševec with Dubrava and Mihaljevac, and Vidovec with Dubrava, and a bus runs from Mihaljevac up to Sljeme.
