Gračani lies in the Podsljeme district, in a valley ringed by hills at the foot of Medvednica, directly below Sljeme. Its main streams are the Gračanec, Pustodol, Bliznec and Topličica, the last of which rises from a thermal spring. The undeveloped Topličica valley separates Gračani from Šestine, while on the other side the land runs on into neighbouring Markuševec and Remete; the 16th meridian passes between Gračani and Markuševec.
Gračani began as a settlement of serfs belonging to the free town of Gradec and is first recorded in 1334, in a list of villages that owed tithes. It became part of Zagreb after the Second World War. The church of St Michael the Archangel, whose building date is unknown and which is first recorded in a church visitation of 1622, stands on a rise by Isce street in the oldest part of Gračani and is the seat of a parish founded in 1983.
Gračanska cesta runs north from Mihaljevac through Gračani to Gračansko Dolje. The tram line from Mihaljevac to Gračansko Dolje, built in 1950, has stops in Gračani. Next to the terminus at Gračansko Dolje is the valley station of the Sljeme cable car, with an underground car park, and buses serve it too, including the route from Mihaljevac to Markuševec.
