Sesvete is Zagreb's easternmost city district and the largest by area. It borders Gornja and Donja Dubrava to the west, Peščenica – Žitnjak to the south, Zagreb County to the east and Krapina-Zagorje County to the north. Geographically it is Sesvetsko prigorje: the larger, northern part is the gentle southern slopes of Medvednica, with stream valleys and villages such as Kašina, Moravče and Blaguša, and the south a plain towards the Sava with settlements and a business zone.
Industry drove rapid growth from the mid-1960s in Sesvete and the once separate villages along the Zagreb–Dugo Selo road (Brestje, Sesvetska Sela, Kraljevečki Novaki, Kobiljak, Sesvetski Kraljevec), now merged into one town. Since the mid-2000s the same has happened along the roads to Sveti Ivan Zelina and Kašina. The place is named after its Church of All Saints; the present Baroque church on Trg Dragutina Domjanića, the centre, was built in 1766–1773. The chapter's curia on the square, finished in 1784, houses the Prigorje Museum, with a market and a health centre nearby. South of the centre lies Novi Jelkovec, a residential-and-commercial estate built by Zagrebački holding after 2006.
Trams don't reach Sesvete: the nearest terminus is Dubec on Avenija Dubrava, about 2.5 km west, where buses take over, including to Novi Jelkovec. Public transport means the city railway and ZET buses: Sesvete station is a few hundred metres south of the square, with further halts at Sesvetska Sopnica and Sesvetski Kraljevec. Markovo polje city cemetery is also in the district.
Census 2021: 70,800 people, 7.5% of households renting, 19.2% of flats empty. Empty flats by district
