Borongaj is the eastern part of Peščenica, south of the railway that runs beside Branimirova. Volovčica adjoins it to the west, and Vukomerec carries on to the east. Borongajska cesta runs through the neighbourhood. Most of the housing was built after the Second World War, on flat ground.
Borongaj airport opened here in the late 1920s. After the Second World War the site became a Yugoslav People's Army barracks, and after 1990 a Croatian Army one. In 2006 the government handed the former barracks to the ministry responsible for science, and the Borongaj university campus opened at the start of the academic year, on 12 October 2007. It houses the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences and the Faculty of Croatian Studies, and the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences also teaches there.
No trams run through the neighbourhood itself. The Borongaj tram terminus is about a kilometre to the west, just inside the Maksimir district, and the Maksimir railway halt on Branimirova is close by. Buses run along Borongajska cesta, with a stop at the campus, while further south trams on Ulica grada Vukovara head towards Savišće and Žitnjak.
