What it's like to live in Peščenica

Peščenica is the north-western, built-up part of the Peščenica – Žitnjak district, east of Heinzelova and bordering the Lower Town and Maksimir. The name mainly refers to Stara Peščenica, the area bounded by Zvonimirova, Heinzelova and Branimirova. South of the railway, Donje Svetice extends down to Ulica grada Vukovara. The whole area is flat.

In 1913 Mayor Janko Holjac planned a quarter of villas here, and Stara Peščenica was built up as a suburb between the two world wars. Donje Svetice mostly dates from after the Second World War. The University of Zagreb's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is on Heinzelova, and the ministry responsible for science and education has its headquarters in Donje Svetice.

An underpass beneath the railway links Svetice in the north with Donje Svetice in the south. Planinska is Donje Svetice's main east–west street; the Volovčica market is nearby on Trg Volovčica, in the neighbouring Volovčica local council. Trams run along Zvonimirova to the Borongaj terminus, along Maksimirska a little further north towards Dubrava and Dubec, and along Ulica grada Vukovara on the southern edge towards Savišće and Žitnjak.
