What it's like to live in Dugave

Dugave is a residential estate in the south-east of New Zagreb, in the New Zagreb – East district. Vatikanska ulica separates it from Travno to the north, and Ulica SR Njemačke from Sloboština to the west. Jakuševec lies to the east, and to the south is Hrelić, known for its car and second-hand market.

In the 1975 urban and architectural competition for the estate, first prize went to Ivan Čižmek, Tomislav Odak, Tomislav Bilić and Zdenko Vazdar, and the foundation stone was laid on 25 May 1977. Unlike the older New Zagreb estates, Dugave has no right-angled street grid, and it was planned with plenty of green space. Savišće, a dried-up arm of the Sava, runs through the estate from north to south, and children sometimes go sledging there in winter.

Dugave has a primary school (I. osnovna škola Dugave), a kindergarten, a library, a health clinic, pharmacies, sports pitches and a football club, NK Zelengaj, plus the Mali Oktogon and Veliki Oktogon shopping centres. The parish church of St Matthew, on the street of the same name, went up in the early 1990s: Mass has been said there since Easter 1993, and it was consecrated in 2006. Direct bus routes link the estate with the main railway station and with Črnomerec.
