What it's like to live in Središće

Središće is in the north-west of New Zagreb – East, between the Sava to the north and Avenija Dubrovnik to the south, with Avenija Većeslava Holjevca to the west and Zapruđe to the east. The writer Gustav Krklec gave it its name, believing that this was where the centre (središte) of New Zagreb should be. The architect Vinko Uhlik is known, among other work, for housing complexes in Središće, Zapruđe and Siget.

The northern part of the neighbourhood is taken up by Bundek, a lake and park stretching from Most slobode to Most mladosti. The lake was left by gravel digging in the 1950s for Most slobode and the new housing estates, and the park and lake were completely redone in 2005. The large lake has a beach with lifeguards on duty in summer, while the small lake is kept as a natural habitat. Around the water are a cycling and skating path, playgrounds and barbecue spots, with beach volleyball and handball courts in the eastern part of the park.

The Museum of Contemporary Art has been at Avenija Dubrovnik 17 since 2009, with Avenue Mall on the other side of the junction with Avenija Većeslava Holjevca. Osnovna škola Središće, a primary school, is at Ulica Savezne Republike Njemačke 2a, and the American International School of Zagreb faces Bundek. Several tram stops line Avenija Dubrovnik.
