What it's like to live in New Zagreb – East

New Zagreb – East is a flat, low-lying district south of the Sava, which separates it from Trnje and Peščenica – Žitnjak. Avenija Većeslava Holjevca divides it from New Zagreb – West, and to the south-east it borders the town of Velika Gorica. Until the 1960s the land was mostly pasture, gullies and ponds, with only a few people living in the villages of Buzin, Otok, Jakuševec and Hrelić.

From the 1960s onwards the housing estates of Zapruđe, Utrina, Sopot, Travno, Dugave, Sloboština and Središće went up, planned with schools, kindergartens, health centres and green space. The oldest is Zapruđe, built between 1963 and 1968, and Travno has Mamutica, a large 1970s residential block designed by Đuro Mirković. The district also takes in Hrelić and Jakuševec and, south of the city bypass, Buzin and Veliko Polje, where housing sits alongside business zones.

Bundek lake and park and the Museum of Contemporary Art are in the north of the district. Utrina has a covered market, and Hrelić hosts a car and second-hand market. The Prudinec – Jakuševec landfill and the Zagreb marshalling yard are also in the district. Trams run along Avenija Dubrovnik and over Most mladosti towards the city centre, and Sloboština, Travno and Dugave have direct bus routes to the main railway station.
