What it's like to live in New Zagreb – West

New Zagreb – West lies entirely south of the Sava, in the south-west of the city. The river separates it from Podsused – Vrapče, Stenjevec, Trešnjevka – South and Trnje; it borders New Zagreb – East to the east, Brezovica to the south and Zagreb County to the west. The land is low-lying and much of it is still pasture, meadow and farmland.

Only the smaller north-eastern part is densely built up: Kajzerica, Savski gaj, Remetinečki gaj, Lanište, Siget and Trnsko. Remetinečki gaj (from 1956), Savski gaj, Trnsko and Siget were the first estates built here, and Podbrežje, next to Siget, dates from the late 2010s. Blato and Sveta Klara are less built up, and to the south and west lie settlements that were rural until recently, such as Lučko, Hrvatski Leskovac, Ježdovec, Mala Mlaka, Odra and Hrašće Turopoljsko. Around Ježdovec and Mala Mlaka is a protected water-supply zone with the Mala Mlaka wellfield.

The district has the Zagreb Fair, the hippodrome, the Arena Zagreb hall and the Arena Centar and Avenue Mall shopping centres, and the city market company runs the Savski Gaj, Trnsko and Botinec markets here. Jadranska avenija, Avenija Dubrovnik, the city bypass and railway lines to western and southern Croatia all cross it. Trams come over Jadranski most and run along Avenija Dubrovnik past Savski gaj and Trnsko. Buses from the Savski most terminal serve Botinec, Lučko and Sveta Klara, and the railway stations are Remetinec and Zagreb Klara.
