New Zagreb is the part of the city south of the Sava; in its early years it was called Južni Zagreb (South Zagreb). Since the 1999 administrative reorganisation it has been made up of two city districts, New Zagreb – West and New Zagreb – East, divided by Avenija Većeslava Holjevca. The whole area is flat and low-lying.
Building across the river first appeared in the 1948 master plan, and housing estates began to go up in the mid-1950s under mayor Većeslav Holjevac, often called the father of New Zagreb. The northern part of Savski gaj, from 1957, is seen as the first step, and Trnsko was the first estate planned as a whole, with public services and a shopping centre. Most slobode opened in 1959, and the Zagreb Fair complex was built between 1956 and 1964. New Zagreb is known for its brutalist architecture and residential tower blocks. Since the 2000s it has gained large shopping centres and Arena Zagreb, and the Podbrežje estate dates from the late 2010s.
The tram first reached New Zagreb in 1979 over Most mladosti, and the loop was closed on 29 November 1985, when the line over Jadranski most opened. Trams run along Avenija Dubrovnik and cross the Sava on Jadranski most and Most mladosti.
