Neighbourhood guideRetkovecPrefab houses from 1965, streets named after trees and a brick-clad churchDonja Dubrava is the southern part of Dubrava, east of Maksimir. It runs from Avenija Dubrava, its boundary with Gornja Dubrava, down to Slavonska avenija, beyond which lies the Peščenica – Žitnjak district. The ground is flat and low-lying. The railway and Branimirova cross the district from east to west, separating a more densely built north from a sparser south. It has been a city district since 1999.
The north-west is tightly packed: narrow streets and closely spaced family houses, with some larger residential and commercial buildings among them, mostly towards the east. That character took shape after the Second World War, when private family houses dominated building. Retkovec, listed as “Retkouch” in a cathedral chapter charter of 1328, has two parts: Stari Retkovec, the historic core, and Novi Retkovec, a planned prefabricated estate put up after the 1964 flood for people from Trnje and Trešnjevka, with streets named after trees and flowers.
The south-eastern half is forest and fields (Čulinečina, Retkovčina, Laz, Krčevina), including Čulinečina park-forest, while the south-west holds a business zone of factories, shopping centres, service yards and warehouses. Trams run along Avenija Dubrava, on the northern edge of Retkovec, to the Dubec terminus, and passenger trains stop at the Trnava and Čulinec halts on the railway.
