What it's like to live in Upper Town – Medveščak

The Upper Town – Medveščak district covers the medieval cores of Gradec and Kaptol and the areas north of them on both sides of Medveščak street, including some on the slopes of Medvednica. It borders the Lower Town to the south, Črnomerec to the west, Maksimir to the east and Podsljeme to the north. Its neighbourhoods include the Upper Town, Kaptol, Ribnjak, Medveščak with Nova Ves, Šalata, Tuškanac and Pantovčak.

The southern part, around Medveščak, is made up of densely built city blocks, while further north the land turns hilly and more thinly settled. The district has a string of parks and park-forests, among them Tuškanac, Pantovčak, Zelengaj, Jelenovac-Vrhovec, Orlovac and Remetski kamenjak. It is also home to Mirogoj cemetery, officially opened in 1876, whose arcades and pavilions were built to Hermann Bollé's designs.

The main road runs through the district from south to north: it starts as narrow Ribnjak street beside the park of the same name, continues as Medveščak street up to Gupčeva zvijezda and then as Ksaverska cesta, and trams follow it. Along the district's southern edge trams run on Ilica, Jurišićeva and Vlaška, while city buses, including routes from Britanski trg and Kaptol, serve the hilly north.
