What it's like to live in Medveščak

Medveščak lies north of Kaptol. It shares its name with a stream that rises on Medvednica and goes underground at Ksaverska cesta. Its backbone is Medveščak street, which runs north from Ribnjak park to Gupčeva zvijezda. Nova Ves runs parallel to it, from Kaptol up to Gupčeva zvijezda, and north of the square the route continues as Ksaverska cesta.

Nova Ves is one of Zagreb's oldest streets: it appears in the cathedral chapter's statutes of 1334, and in 1344 the chapter granted it a charter as a free village. It is still lined mostly with single-storey houses and the odd two-storey one, among them houses of the cathedral's prebendaries rebuilt in brick in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the Kaptol Centar shopping centre is also on Nova Ves. The Mala scena theatre, which has played for children and young audiences since 1986, is at Medveščak 2, and the small Glogovac park is also in the neighbourhood.

Gupčeva zvijezda is where Medveščak, Ksaverska cesta, Mirogojska cesta and Vrančićeva meet. Its 1935 tram shelter is a protected cultural monument, and a small garden park designed by Dragutin Kiš in 1976 sits on the square. A short way up, at Mirogojska 8, is the Dr Fran Mihaljević Clinic for Infectious Diseases. Trams run along Medveščak and on up Ksaverska cesta to Mihaljevac.
