Remete is a neighbourhood in north-east Zagreb, on the slopes of Medvednica, in the Maksimir district and not far from Mirogoj cemetery. It was a separate settlement until the late 1940s. It takes its name from the Paulines, hermit monks (Latin eremita), who founded a monastery here.
The monastery is first recorded in a charter of 30 September 1288. Beside it stands the Gothic Church of the Assumption, the shrine of Our Lady of Remete, whose marble high altar holds a 15th-century Gothic wooden statue of the Virgin. The nave was lengthened in 1721–1722, when the church also got its Baroque façade, and Herman Bollé restored it after the 1880 earthquake. Emperor Joseph II abolished the Pauline order in 1786, and Remete parish was founded in 1812. Today the Carmelites look after the monastery and the shrine.
The city's Remete cemetery is here. There is no tram: buses run through Remete between Kaptol and Svetice, passing Mirogoj on the way. The nearest tram terminus is Gračansko dolje in Gračani, to the north-west.
