Špansko is a residential neighbourhood in the Stenjevec district, bounded by Zagrebačka avenija to the south, Oranice to the east, Malešnica to the north and Jankomir to the west. Ulica Antuna Šoljana divides it into two local committee areas, Špansko – sjever (north) and Špansko – jug (south). It first appears in records in the 13th century under the name Lonka, and the name Špansko has been in use since the late 16th century.
The neighbourhood took on its present form in the 1980s, when large blocks of flats went up in quick succession; they are still its core. The newer section, Špansko – Oranice, got its own primary school in 2007. Most streets carry the names of Croatian writers such as Juraj Baraković, Dobriša Cesarić and Antun Šoljan, while two promenades in Oranice are named after Croatian Army brigades.
Trg Ivana Kukuljevića has the Špansko – sjever library, with the Park of Croatian Volunteers of the Homeland War (Park hrvatskih dragovoljaca Domovinskog rata) close by. The neighbourhood market, Tržnica Špansko, has a covered selling area and stands on Cesarićeva ulica. Špansko also has a second city library (Špansko – jug), a health centre, the Ante Kovačić, Tituš Brezovački and Špansko Oranice primary schools, and two parishes: Our Lady of Sorrows and Blessed Ivan Merz. Trams do not run into Špansko; the nearest stop is the Prečko terminus just south of Zagrebačka avenija, the westernmost in the city. Direct bus lines link Špansko with Črnomerec and Ljubljanica.
