Gajnice is a residential neighbourhood on the western side of Zagreb, in the Podsused – Vrapče district, between Stenjevec to the east and Podsused to the west, at the foot of the Medvednica hills. Aleja Bologne and the railway both pass through it, and trains towards Zaprešić and Zagreb's main station call at the Gajnice stop.
The first Gajnice went up in the late 1940s as the Jedinstvo Factory Settlement (Naselje tvornice Jedinstvo), for workers at the factory then being built south of the railway in Jankomir. It rose on empty plots along a village track called Gajnica and was designed by architects of the Arhitektonski projektni zavod, among them Slavko Löwy. Only a small part of the plan was built. The hostel for single workers and the boarding school of that time are gone, but the 1956 community hall and shop building are now part of the Gajnice market, and the old bowling alley is the building at Gajnice 36. Most of today's Gajnice was built in the 1970s and 1980s as a new housing estate.
Several streets are named after Latin American countries, among them Argentinska, Brazilska, Čileanska, Meksička and Peruanska, and others after Mahatma Gandhi, Henri Dunant and Pablo Neruda. The Susedgrad Culture Centre (Centar za kulturu Susedgrad) is at Argentinska 5, and the Gajnice library at Meksička 6. Direct bus lines run here from the Črnomerec terminal, and one of them continues to Prečko.
