What it's like to live in Podsused – Vrapče

Podsused – Vrapče is Zagreb's westernmost city district. To the east and south it borders Črnomerec, Stenjevec and New Zagreb – West; to the south-west, on the Sava, the town of Sveta Nedelja; and to the west, on the river Krapina, Zaprešić. Its main roads towards the city centre run east–west: Aleja Bologne, Samoborska cesta, Ilica, Karažnik and Bolnička cesta. The key north–south routes are Vrapčanska, Gospodska, Dubravica and Zelena magistrala.

The district has several centres: Vrapče, Stenjevec, Gajnice and Podsused. Land south of the railway is mostly business; the housing lies north of it. Vrapče, Gajnice and the northern part of Stenjevec are densely populated; the Stenjevec – sjever housing block went up there in the 1970s and 1980s. The hills towards Medvednica hold less urbanised settlements with something of a rural character: Perjavica, Borčec, Gornji Stenjevec, Gornje Vrapče, Bizek, Gajnički Vidikovac and Podsusedsko Dolje. Podsused, at the far western end, is also less urbanised.

In Podsused, on the south-western slopes of Medvednica, stand the ruins of Susedgrad, a 14th-century castle and protected monument, reached by an educational trail from the centre of Podsused. From Gornji Stenjevec a hiking trail follows the Dubravica valley to the Veternica cave, whose first section is open for guided visits, and to the Glavica mountain hut. No trams run in the district. Trains towards Zaprešić stop at Vrapče, Gajnice and Podsused, and buses from the Črnomerec terminal climb to the hillside settlements, from Gornje Vrapče and Borčec to Bizek and Podsusedsko Dolje.
