What it's like to live in Kustošija

Kustošija lies on the western side of Zagreb, in the Črnomerec district, between central Črnomerec, Vrapče and Mikulići. Ilica runs through its southern part, and Kustošijanska ulica leaves Ilica heading north through Graberje and Završje to Gornja Kustošija, from where the road continues to Krvarić. The Kustošak brook flows through the neighbourhood, the Grmoščica park-forest stretches towards Vrapče, and the boundary of Medvednica Nature Park reaches the northern edge of the built-up area. Donja Kustošija belongs administratively to the neighbouring Stenjevec district.

Records of Kustošija go back to the early modern period. It takes its name from a canon custodian (kustos) who looked after the area when it was an estate of the Zagreb chapter at Kaptol, and it became part of Zagreb in 1945; from 1937 it had been a municipality of its own, split off from Vrapče. The parish of St Nikola Tavelić was founded in 1939, and Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac consecrated its church in 1943.

Trams terminate at Črnomerec, on the eastern edge of Kustošija, and buses from the terminal there run to Graberje, Gornja Kustošija and Krvarić. Kustošija station, the first stop west of Zapadni kolodvor, is served by suburban trains.
