It is bounded by the Zagreb–Ljubljana railway to the north, Savska cesta to the east, Zagrebačka avenija (formerly part of Ljubljanska avenija) to the south and Zagrebačka cesta to the west, and takes in Stara Trešnjevka, Ljubljanica, Remiza, Voltino, Pongračevo, Ciglenica and Rudeš. Regular city blocks fill the east; further west, narrow streets are lined with closely packed houses.
The change from countryside to town began in 1862 with the railway and the Southern station, today's Zapadni kolodvor, which set off industrialisation; by the late 19th century crafts and trade had grown up along Savska, Selska, Tratinska, Zagorska and Nova cesta. As early as 1891 Zagreb's first, horse-drawn tram ran along Savska cesta, with its depot on the site of today's Nikola Tesla Technical Museum. Savska is also home to the Dražen Petrović Basketball Centre, opened for the 1987 Universiade, and the Cibona tower near the junction with Kranjčevićeva. Close by are Dom sportova on Trg Krešimira Ćosića, opened in 1972, and the football stadium on Kranjčevićeva ulica.
Trams run along Savska cesta towards the city centre and New Zagreb, and along Tratinska and Ozaljska to the Ljubljanica terminus. The district is also crossed by the abandoned route of the Samoborček, the narrow-gauge railway from Zapadni kolodvor to Samobor built in 1901.
