Heinzelova separates it from Trnje to the west and the Sava from New Zagreb – East to the south-west, while to the east it borders Zagreb County. Its urban north-western part, Peščenica, reaches Zvonimirova and borders the Lower Town and Maksimir. The district is flat throughout and was created in 1999.
Peščenica comprises Stara Peščenica, Donje Svetice, Volovčica and Ferenščica, with Borongaj and Vukomerec to the north-east and Folnegovićevo naselje to the south-west. Apart from Stara Peščenica, an inter-war suburb, these areas grew mostly after the Second World War and were largely complete by the end of the 1980s. Most of the area, between Slavonska avenija and the Sava, is Žitnjak, traditionally market-garden country with large business zones. The district also holds the Zagreb combined heat and power plant, the central wastewater treatment plant and the Sašnjak and Petruševec waterworks. On its edges lie Savica Šanci, Kozari Bok, Kozari putevi, Petruševec, Resnik and the separate settlement of Ivanja Reka.
The Savica lakes, remnants of old Sava channels and gravel pits, have been protected as a significant landscape since 1991 and are home to many wetland birds. The Borongaj university campus has stood on the northern edge since 2007. The Zagreb Mosque (1987) is on Gavellina, the Peščenica culture centre (KNAP) on Ivanićgradska, and the City Center one East shopping centre on Slavonska avenija. Trams run along Zvonimirova to Borongaj and along Ulica grada Vukovara to the Žitnjak and Savišće termini.
