Neighbourhood guideJarunFrom a village by a Sava backwater to a neighbourhood by the lakeTrešnjevka – South is a low-lying district on the Sava's alluvial terrace, bounded by Zagrebačka avenija to the north, Savska cesta to the east, the Sava to the south and Savska Opatovina to the west. It takes in Knežija, Horvati, Srednjaci, Gredice, Gajevo, Staglišće, Jarun, Vrbani and Prečko; because of the lake, the whole area except Knežija and Prečko is sometimes simply called Jarun. The densely built residential part lies to the north; the south is taken up by the Jarun sports and recreation centre with its lakes and by the protected water-supply zone along the river.
Between the wars most houses here went up without building permits, so in places the streets still follow the winding layout of the old villages. Building speeded up after the great flood of 1964. In Srednjaci, the tower blocks on Ulica braće Domany can be seen from far off. Three streams from the foothills of Medvednica, the Vrapčak, Kustošak and Črnomerec, cross the district and flow into the Sava downstream of Savski most.
A tram line runs west from Savska cesta along Horvaćanska cesta to Prečko, where Zagreb's westernmost tram terminus opened in 2000. Prečko also has its own market, a public library and the Dom kulture Prečko cultural centre.
