Maksimir is the district north-east of central Zagreb, named after Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac. It begins at Kvaternikov trg on its south-western edge and reaches up to the slopes of Medvednica. Besides Maksimir itself it takes in Kvatrić, Jordanovac, Ravnice, Bukovac, Kozjak, Remete and other areas.
The middle of the district holds Maksimir Park, a park-forest opened to the public in 1794 at Bishop Vrhovac's initiative and redesigned in the English landscape style under Bishop Juraj Haulik in 1839. It has five lakes, with the Zagreb City Zoo at its southern end, and is protected as a monument of park architecture. In the low-lying south-east of the district are Maksimir stadium and the residential area of Ravnice. The Faculty of Agriculture is on Svetošimunska cesta, and Rebro, the largest site of the University Hospital Centre Zagreb, is on Kišpatićeva in Jordanovac.
Maksimirska cesta, which runs from Kvaternikov trg to the junction with Bukovačka and Svetice by the park and stadium, is a densely built street of flats and shops, and trams run along it towards Dubrava. The northern parts of the district are hilly and residential, with no high-rise buildings, and are reached by buses from Kvaternikov trg, Svetice and Kaptol.
Census 2021: 47,356 people, 6.9% of households renting, 21.6% of flats empty. Empty flats by district
