What it's like to live in Stenjevec

Stenjevec is a city district on the western side of Zagreb, lying between the Zagreb–Ljubljana railway to the north and the Sava to the south. From east to west it runs from Zagrebačka cesta to Škorpikova ulica, and the land is entirely flat. The settlement of the same name is split between two districts: its southern part belongs to Stenjevec, its northern part to Podsused – Vrapče.

The eastern part is mainly residential, taking in Špansko and Oranice, Malešnica, Vrapče – jug and Donja Kustošija. The Lucijan Vranjanin grammar school (Gimnazija Lucijana Vranjanina) is on Trg hrvatskih pavlina in Stenjevec. The western part, Jankomir along Škorpikova ulica and Ljubljanska avenija, is given over to business. Industry grew up there in the second half of the 20th century, and over time it was joined by shopping centres such as City Center one West, large home and DIY stores, goods terminals and logistics firms. Jankomir is also home to the Sveti Ivan psychiatric clinic (Klinika za psihijatriju Sveti Ivan).

South of Ljubljanska avenija lies Stara Loza, with a water pumping station, fields and woodland along the Sava embankment; apart from Savska Opatovina it is largely uninhabited. The Jankomir bridge and Ljubljanska avenija form the main western road entrance to Zagreb, and across the bridge is the Jankomir junction on the Zagreb bypass. No trams run through the district; the Kustošija and Vrapče railway stops lie on the line along its northern edge.
