Public transport when you rent in Zagreb
Updated 7 November 2026

Short answer: A general monthly ZET pass costs €47.78, and €13.27 for secondary pupils, full-time students, pensioners and the unemployed. The joint ZET-HŽPP pass, which also covers trains inside the city, costs €53.09 a month. People under 18 and over 65 with a registered permanent address in Zagreb can get a free pass (as of 7 November 2026).
Trams, buses, trains and bikes in Zagreb
ZET runs the trams and buses, with one price list for the whole City of Zagreb: the same ticket works on trams, buses and the funicular. There are 15 day tram lines. Each one's route, stops and the flats to rent along it are on Trams in Zagreb.
ZET's timetable for 21 October to 31 December 2026 has 135 bus lines. Lines numbered 1xx serve the west and south of the city, 2xx the east and Sesvete, and the seven 3xx lines are suburban. The most departures on a weekday, both directions counted, are on 172 from Črnomerec to Zaprešić (245), 118 from Trg Mažuranića to Voltino (238), 109 from Črnomerec to Dugave (212), and 268 from the main station to Velika Gorica and 110 from Savski most to Botinec (204 each). All 135 lines, each with its route on a map, are on ZET buses.
HŽ Putnički prijevoz trains also stop at stations inside the city. By the timetable for Tuesday 10 November 2026, both directions together: about 260 trains at Glavni kolodvor (the main station), about 120 at Maksimir, about 110 at Sesvete, about 100 at Zapadni kolodvor, Gajnice, Vrapče, Kustošija and Podsused, about 40 at Klara, Odra and Buzin, and about 30 at Remetinec. We don't republish HŽ timetables; check departures on hzpp.hr.
The BAJS public bikes have 200 stations in the city (operator data, 7 November 2026).
What every flat on NajamStanova.com tells you about transport
Every flat on our site shows the tram and bus lines nearby, the nearest railway station with the number of trains that stop there, the nearest night tram stop, and the first and last day tram. Trains and trams are counted for a weekday. Below that is a map with the tram, bus and train stops. Buttons under the map show shops, pharmacies, health services, kindergartens and schools, and BAJS stations.
We work all of this out for the area the flat is in, never for its address. The circle on the map is the approximate location, and the number on each button counts places inside the circle. A railway station is shown if it is within 1.5 km in a straight line of the area's centre.
What a ZET ticket costs (2026)
One ticket works on trams, buses and the funicular. A single ticket is cheaper if you buy it before you board or pay by card in the vehicle than if you buy it from the driver:
| Single ticket | In advance or by card | From the driver |
|---|---|---|
| 30 minutes | €0.53 | €0.80 |
| 60 minutes | €0.93 | €1.33 |
| 90 minutes | €1.33 | €1.99 |
| Ticket | Price |
|---|---|
| Night single ticket | €1.99 |
| Day ticket | €3.98 |
| 3 days | €9.29 |
| 7 days | €19.91 |
| 15 days | €26.54 |
| 30 days | €53.09 |
| Monthly pass, general | €47.78 |
| Monthly pass: secondary pupils, full-time students, pensioners, unemployed | €13.27 |
| Monthly pass: primary pupils | €11.95 |
| Annual pass, general | €461.88 |
| Under 18 and 65+, living in Zagreb | free |
| Making the pass card | €3.98 |
Multi-day tickets work day and night and are sold only at ZET sales points.
The pass card is in your name, and anyone can get the general one. At a ZET sales point you hand in a request with a 3 × 3.5 cm photo, show your ID and attach a copy of its front. The card costs €3.98 to make, and you can also hold the pass in the MojZET app.
The monthly pass pays off if you make 52 or more trips a month on €0.93 tickets, or 36 or more on €1.33 tickets (our calculation). The fine for riding without a ticket is €66.36 to €106.81. If you pay the €33.18 on the offence certificate you're given, no offence proceedings follow.
Reduced and free ZET passes
The monthly coupon costs €13.27 for secondary pupils, full-time students, pensioners and unemployed people registered with HZZ (the employment service), and €11.95 for primary pupils. The annual coupon costs €127.32 for secondary pupils, students and pensioners, and €115.44 for primary pupils. Part-time students (except unemployed ones, on a separate request), postgraduates and students in employment can't get the student coupon. The 2026/27 student profile runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 October 2027.
The City of Zagreb gives a free annual ZET pass under its Decision on social care to, among others:
- people under 18,
- people over 65, whatever their income,
- pensioners under 65 with an income of up to €560.00 a month,
- full-time secondary pupils over 18 who go to school in Zagreb (since 1 April 2026),
- full-time students from households with up to €265.45 a month per member.
Some people with disabilities, carers and repeat blood donors qualify too. Unemployed people from households with up to €265.45 per member get a free monthly pass. People under 18 and over 65 apply directly to ZET, and the pass is valid from the first day of the month they applied.
For tenants, the Permanent address (prebivalište)simplifiedThe address where you've settled for good, the centre of your life. You register it with the police within 15 days of moving in.Source: Zakon o prebivalištu (NN 144/12, 158/13, 114/22), Art. 2–4 and 10, checked 19 Oct 2026More in the glossary decides it. Croatian citizens have these City rights only with a registered permanent address (prebivalište) in Zagreb, and foreigners with permanent stay or long-term residence in Zagreb. A registered Temporary address (boravište)simplifiedThe address where you live for a while without settling there for good. You register it with the police within 15 days if you'll stay longer than three months.Source: Zakon o prebivalištu (NN 144/12, 158/13, 114/22), Art. 2, 4 and 10, checked 19 Oct 2026More in the glossary isn't enough. A student who kept their permanent address in another town therefore can't get the income-based free pass and pays the student coupon. How to register an address in a rented flat is in our guide to registering your address.
Trains inside the city: the joint ZET-HŽPP pass
For trains inside the City of Zagreb there is a joint ZET-HŽPP pass. The monthly one costs €53.09, the annual €636.96, or €573.26 paid at once. It covers 2nd class on regular trains within the city plus trams, buses and the funicular, with no limit on trips.
You buy it at ZET sales points or in the Moj ZET app. When you ask for a pass, say straight away that you want the train included. For trips beyond the city, for example to Dugo Selo, Velika Gorica or Zaprešić, add a connection ticket at an HŽPP ticket office: zone 1 costs €22.43 a month, €75.52 together with the ZET-HŽPP pass.
Neither ZET nor HŽPP says that an ordinary ZET ticket, single or the €47.78 monthly coupon, is valid on trains. Trains inside the city are covered by the joint pass.
Children, primary and secondary pupils, full-time students, pensioners and people over 65 ride trains for free, in 2nd class on regular trains. Children not yet at school need only an ID showing their date of birth; everyone else needs an HŽPP smart card with a €2.65 profile. The Government has extended these schemes until 31 December 2026.
Night trams and buses
Four tram lines run at night: 31 from Črnomerec to Savski most, 32 from Prečko to Borongaj, 33 from Mihaljevac to Savišće and 34 from Ljubljanica to Dubec. The night bus lines are 116 from Ljubljanica to Podsused most, 172 from Črnomerec to Zaprešić, 212 from Dubec to Sesvete, 233 from Mihaljevac to Markuševec and 268 from the main station to Velika Gorica. A night ticket costs €1.99.
If you often come home late, check which night tram line stops closest to the flat's area; every flat on our site shows it.
BAJS public bikes and what they cost
You rent a BAJS bike in the nextbike app. Activating the account costs €10, which stays with you as ride credit.
- No subscription: €0.50 for every 30 minutes.
- Monthly subscription: €5.00, renewing itself after 30 days.
- Annual subscription: €30.00.
With a subscription, a ride of up to 30 minutes is free if it starts at least 20 minutes after your previous free ride. Every further 30 minutes costs €0.50. You return the bike to a station: ending a ride elsewhere, or leaving the bike unlocked, costs €30.
Bikes aren't allowed on ZET trams or buses. On HŽ trains that carry bikes, a bike ticket costs €1.99 one way. The BAJS stations near a flat are on the map next to every listing, under the Bikes button, and every station with the bikes there right now is on our Bajs station map.
How to check your commute before a viewing
- 1On the listing, look at the tram, bus and train rows and the map. The circle is the approximate area, so ask the advertiser for the exact address and the nearest stop.
- 2On Where can I live?, pick your budget and the place you travel to every day, such as a faculty, a hospital or Ban Jelačić Square. The map shows minutes from the centre of each city district by ZET's timetable, for weekday departures between 7:00 and 8:50.
- 3Open the page of a line that stops near the flat, from Trams or Buses. It shows where the line goes and, for a bus, how many departures it has on a weekday.
- 4If you don't know which neighbourhood a street is in, type it into Neighbourhood by street.
- 5Before you sign, make the trip from the flat to work at least once, at the time you'd normally travel. ZET's call centre answers 24 hours a day on 072 500 400.
- 6If you drive to work, check whether the flat's street is in a paid zone and what parking costs on Parking zones in Zagreb.
What rent costs along each tram stop, by the price per m² of its neighbourhood, is in the story Renting along the tram. Browse flats by part of the city in the centre, west Zagreb and east Zagreb, and compare neighbourhoods on Neighbourhoods.
