Šestine is a settlement in the Podsljeme district, on the southern slopes of Medvednica, and forms a local council area of its own. It began to grow in the 13th century, after Medvedgrad fortress was built; it is recorded as a separate parish from 1673 and became a separate municipality in 1893. The name comes from šestina, a feudal levy paid on the sixth day of the week.
The parish church of St Mirko stands on the site of a 13th-century church; it has been extended several times and took its present form in 1909. Beside the church is the grave of Ante Starčević, with a monument by Ivan Rendić unveiled in 1903. On Himper street stands the Kulmer manor (Kulmerovi dvori), named after its last owners, the Kulmer family, who enlarged and remodelled it in the 19th century.
The Šestine umbrella (šestinski kišobran), part of the area's traditional folk costume, is named after the village. Šestine primary school is on Podrebernica, in Šestinski Kraljevec. Buses run from Britanski trg to Šestine, and the Britanski trg – Mihaljevac route also passes through Šestine and Mlinovi.
