Črnomerec is a district in north-west Zagreb, a long strip running from the railway in the south up into the forests of Medvednica. It takes its name from a stream, and in the narrowest sense the name means the area around the tram terminus. The flat part south of Ilica is fully built up, continues the Lower Town and has most of the public facilities. Further north the ground turns hilly, cut by streams such as the Kustošak, Kuniščak and Jelenovački potok, and the northern part still shows traces of traditional village life.
The district takes in Kustošija, Sveti Duh, Jelenovac, and Šestinski dol with Vrhovec, as well as Mikulići, Bijenik and Lukšići on the slopes of Medvednica; the medieval fortress of Medvedgrad stands on a hill above Lukšići. It is home to the Sveti Duh Clinical Hospital, the Sestre milosrdnice Clinical Hospital Centre on Vinogradska cesta, and the Grmoščica and Jelenovac park-forests. Old industrial sites line Ilica and the railway. On Prilaz baruna Filipovića, the riding hall of an Austro-Hungarian cavalry barracks, designed in 1910, housed a textile factory from 1924 to 2008; restored, it is now Lauba, a house for people and art.
Trams run along Ilica to the Črnomerec terminus, which the line reached in the early 1910s. The bus terminal beside it serves western parts of the city, the district's hillside settlements, Zaprešić and Bistra. On the southern edge, suburban trains stop at Zapadni kolodvor, opened in 1862 and Zagreb's central station until 1892, and at Kustošija.
