Where Brezovica is

Brezovica takes in the southernmost, mostly rural part of the City of Zagreb.14,9 To the north it borders Novi Zagreb – zapad (New Zagreb – West), and on every other side Zagreb County; its neighbours include the municipality of Pisarovina and the Velika Gorica area.12,14,15,16 The northern boundary runs along the south side of the Sava–Odra relief canal and the Zagreb–Ljubljana motorway, that is the Zagreb bypass, and then along the Zagreb–Karlovac railway. At Demerje it leaves the railway and follows cadastral lines, a channel and Gornjodemerska ulica.1,2,9

The outer boundary, which is also the City boundary, starts at the junction of Slemenska and Karlovačka cesta and runs south down the middle of Karlovačka cesta. It crosses the Zagreb–Rijeka railway, follows the Brebernica stream and Štrpet street, then turns north-east, runs along Latišče street, crosses Turopoljska cesta and follows the Lukavec stream to the relief canal.1,2 The whole settlements of Brebernica, Demerje, Desprim, Donji and Gornji Dragonožec, Donji and Gornji Trpuci, Drežnik Brezovički, Goli Breg, Grančari, Havidić Selo, Horvati, Hudi Bitek, Kupinečki Kraljevec, Lipnica, Starjak, Strmec and Zadvorsko lie in the district. It also takes in most of the settlements of Brezovica and Odranski Obrež and part of Odra; the rest of those three lies in Novi Zagreb – zapad.1,2

District council and local committees

Brezovica is one of the 17 city districts set up by the City Statute of 14 December 1999.8,9 The City Assembly fixed the districts' boundaries and seats in a decision of 26 February 2009, amended in 2017 and 2020.1,2 The local committees (mjesni odbori) were founded in February 2009.7 The district's seat is in Brezovica, at Brezovička cesta 100, and its council has 11 members and was constituted on 26 June 2025.1,3,6,5

After the Second World War the area of today's district was split between the Zagreb and Velika Gorica districts (kotari); Trpuci, Dragonožec, Lipnica, Havidići, Odranski Obrež and Strmec belonged to Velika Gorica. In 1952 it was divided into the municipalities of Brezovica, Stupnik and Dubranec, and three years later the whole area joined the municipality of Remetinec. From 1974 the Brezovica villages belonged to the municipality of Novi Zagreb, which worked until 31 December 1990.7 In 1997 the municipality of Stupnik left the City for Zagreb County, and the settlement of Horvati, which had been part of it, became part of the City of Zagreb again.8

Its parts: what is where in Brezovica

The north of the district is flat, part of the western Zagreb plain, and the south lies on the gently hilly Vukomeričke gorice, with woods, meadows and pastures.14,9 The City lists the district's woods as Stupnički lug, Kraljevačka šuma, Obreški lug and Demerčica; Obreški lug is in the eastern, Turopolje part.12,14 Urban land uses such as housing, business and sport take up one of the smallest shares in Zagreb here, and forest, farmland and undeveloped land one of the largest.13,14

The settlements are scattered, made up of family houses with farm buildings. Larger fields stand out between them: Brezovičko polje and the fields of Kupinečki Kraljevec and Odranski Obrež.14,9 In the City's 2020 analysis the average dwelling in Brezovica, 89.2 m², is the second largest in Zagreb, after Podsljeme, which the City puts down to family-house building.13,14 Medieval documents mention Demerje, Hudi Bitek, Obrež, Štrpet, Lipnica, Grančari and Kraljevec.7 The City counts the larger villages and parish centres that keep local vernacular building among the landscape's assets.14

Between the 2001 and 2011 censuses the population grew notably in the Brezovica and Kupinečki Kraljevec – centar local committees and fell in Havidići, Lipnica and Kupinečki Kraljevec II.12 New building is planned for the central part of the district. The City's 2020 analysis names Drežnik as the largest newly planned settlement, covered by the USA škola urban plan, and the Desprim and Zadvorsko plans, adopted in December 2025 and January 2026, provide for low-density housing with a nursery, a public park and sports grounds.13,38,39

According to the City's 2020 catalogue, the district's villages had six primary schools, three City nursery buildings and five health-centre buildings.12,13 In July 2026 the City said that in recent years the Kupinečki Kraljevec primary school had been rebuilt and extended and the Odranski Obrež nursery built.35

Horvati

Kupinečki Kraljevec
Kraljevec is mentioned in medieval documents, and the City counts the fields of Kupinečki Kraljevec among the district's larger farming areas.7,14 Three local committees carry the village's name: Kupinečki Kraljevec – centar, Kupinečki Kraljevec I. and Kupinečki Kraljevec II.12 The family doctor's surgery is at Kraljevečki brijegi 69, and bus 161 runs from Savski most through Kupinečki Kraljevec to Štrpet.28,20
Odranski Obrež and Strmec

Dragonožec
After the war Donji and Gornji Dragonožec belonged to the Velika Gorica district, and from 1952 to the municipality of Dubranec.7 The branch school in Donji Dragonožec has two buildings from 1914, listed in the Register of Cultural Property.36,37 The surgery is at Šipkovina 1, and bus 166 runs from Glavni kolodvor to Donji Dragonožec.28,30,22
Demerje
Demerje is mentioned in medieval documents, and in 1952 it went to the municipality of Stupnik.7 At Demerje the district boundary leaves the railway for cadastral lines, a channel and Gornjodemerska ulica.1,2 The City's 2020 analysis mentions a planned urban plan for sport and recreation here.13
Lipnica, Havidić Selo and Trpuci
Lipnica is mentioned in medieval documents.7 Bus 160 runs from Savski most to Lipnica and Havidić Selo, and bus 163 to Donji and Gornji Trpuci.20,19 The 2026 Roller Coaster cycling marathon, which started and finished on Brezovička cesta, ran along Havidička cesta.18

It is due for completion in 2029 and aims at more capacity, speeds up to 160 km/h and better suburban service between Zagreb and Karlovac.25,26,24

Part of the western boundary runs down the middle of Karlovačka cesta, in the east the boundary crosses Turopoljska cesta, and the Zagreb bypass forms part of the northern edge.1,2,9 Brezovička cesta continues as Prigradska and Obreška ulica, then as Dragonožečka, Donjodragonožečka and Gornjodragonožečka ulica and Havidička cesta.18 Horvati lies on the Rakov Potok – Kupinečki Kraljevec road.17 According to the City's 2020 analysis, the spatial plan reserves a corridor for a new bypass road from Horvati to Donji Dragonožec.13
