Where Maksimir is
Maksimir takes up the north-east of the central city and covers part of the settlement of Zagreb.10,1 It borders Donji grad and Gornji grad – Medveščak to the west, Podsljeme to the north, Gornja and Donja Dubrava to the east and Peščenica – Žitnjak to the south.10,9 The western border runs along the west side of Heinzelova, round the west side of Kvaternikov trg and on along Domjanićeva, Srebrnjak and the north side of Bijenička cesta, then up the Fučkov jarek stream to Kameniti stol.1,2
In the north the border follows the Remete cadastral boundary, crosses the Bliznec and Črna voda streams, reaches Jazbina and comes down the Dotrščina stream through the forest of the same name to Štefanovec.1,2 In the east it runs along the west side of Avenija Gojka Šuška to Maksimirska cesta, along its south side to Mandlova and down the east side of Mandlova to the Zagreb – Dugo Selo railway. The southern border follows the north side of the railway, which is also the south side of Branimirova, then Ulica Divka Budaka, Kennedyjev trg and Zvonimirova back to Heinzelova.1,2

District council and local committees
Zagreb's 17 city districts were created by the City Statute of 14 December 1999.5 Their borders and seats are set by a decision the City Assembly adopted on 26 February 2009.2,1 An amendment in 2017 only corrected the name of Ulica Divka Budaka in Maksimir's border description. A 2020 amendment rewrote the borders of several other districts and left Maksimir's unchanged.3,4 The district council elected in 2025 has 15 members and first met on 27 June 2025. The seat and the City's local office are at Petrova ulica 116.7,1,8
According to the City's district history, from 1945 to 1952 most of today's district was the city's III. rajon, and in 1953 the inner Maksimir area, without Remete, became one of eight inner-city municipalities. From 1955 the Maksimir municipality also took in Remete and the Markuševec part of today's Podsljeme, and seven years later the previously separate municipality of Zagrebačka Dubrava was joined to it.6 Municipalities were abolished in 1967. From 1974 the area again belonged to a Maksimir municipality, together with Markuševec, which ceased to exist on 31 December 1990. The district's local committees (mjesni odbori) were set up in February 2009.6

Its parts: what is where in the Maksimir district
The City describes the southern, mostly flat part, down to Zvonimirova in the south-west and Nova Branimirova and the railway in the south-east, as highly urbanised and criss-crossed by roads linking the north-east of the city and its suburbs with the centre. The northern part lies on the Medvednica foothills, where settled areas mix with the remains of a once vast forest.9,10 According to the City's 2011 land-use survey, housing and mixed use take up 33.9% of the district, forest 196.7 hectares and public green space 192 hectares.9 A wide open lowland running from the Medvednica slopes along the east edge of the Maksimir forest to Ravnice keeps a view of the mountain and brings fresh mountain air into the densely built flat part of the city.9,10
Building began in the late 19th century along Maksimirska cesta, which with Vlaška does for the east of the city what Ilica does for the west, as the main road into town from the Varaždin direction.12 Petrova ulica, named in 1900 after St Peter's church, was built up with free-standing, mostly two-storey houses, while Milan Lenuci planned the eastern part of Zvonimirova in the early 20th century mainly for family houses of senior officials.12 Gogoljin brijeg on Petrova, an estate of small flats for clerks, dates from 1927, and Željeznička kolonija, the railway workers' colony, was mostly built in 1927 and 1928.13,12 South of the park, in Ravnice, most of the housing is blocks from the 1970s and 1980s.15
Among the factories, Vijenac lists Lipa Mill and RIZ on Maksimirska cesta and Fotokemika east of the stadium. In 1964, after a flood destroyed its works, Kraš moved its biscuit and wafer factory to Ravnice.12,14 The north has former villages: Bukovec, a winegrowing area that gradually filled with family houses, and Remete, a Prigorje village named after the Pauline monks, who built a monastery there in the 13th century.12,6
The City's 2020 leaflet describes Maksimir as a sports district, with the stadium, the SRC Svetice sports centre, the Svetice pool complex and the Maksimir tennis centre. The same leaflet places a cluster of higher-education institutions in the east of the district, with the police college and the faculties of agriculture and forestry.10
- Petrova and Gogoljin brijeg
- Petrova is an old road that linked Vlaška Ves with the bishops' Laščina estate, and it was named in 1900 after St Peter's church.12 It has Gogoljin brijeg, a 1927 colony of small flats.13,12 House numbers from 29 and from 50 upwards belong to the district, and number 116 is the district seat.3,1
- Rebro and Jordanovac
- Several city hospitals were built north of Petrova, on the first slopes of Medvednica.12 KBC Zagreb has Rebro at Kišpatićeva 12 and the Jordanovac outpatient clinic at Jordanovac 104, and Dom zdravlja Zagreb – Istok has a site at Rebar 33.21,22,19,3 Bus 228 runs to Rebro from the Svetice terminal.17
- Dotrščina
- Dotrščina forest is a northern extension of Maksimir park. In the Second World War many antifascists were executed there, and a memorial park was laid out on the site.12 The Dotrščina local committee takes in Jazbina and Čret with the Jazbinski odvojak side streets, and the district's eastern border follows the Dotrščina stream.3,1
Where the name Maksimir comes from
The name Maksimir comes from Bishop Maksimilijan Vrhovac, who opened the park to the public in 1794. The park was named after him Maksimilijanov mir (Maksimilijan's peace), Maksimir for short.11,12

The Zagreb – Dugo Selo railway runs along the district's southern edge. HŽPP's list of stations and stops has the Maksimir stop at Ulica kneza Branimira b. b.1,16
